As a sacrament used for thousands of years in indigenous cultures, it may be no surprise that psilocybin is non-addictive and non-toxic. According to studies and drug statistics, psilocybin is the safest psychedelic. As with any medicine or substance, it’s important to consider current and past mental and physical health conditions and medications before use.
Psilocybin is not suggested for people...
With a mushroom allergy
With previous adverse reactions from psilocybin
Who are pregnant
With current suicidal ideation*
Diagnosed with Bipolar 1*
With a history of schizoaffective or schizophrenia disorders*
With a history of psychosis that was not drug-induced*
With kidney problems or on dialysis
Currently taking Lithium (must be off it a month or so prior to journeying)
With a history of enlarged heart or poor functioning heart
Poorly controlled heart rate or with irregular heart rhythms
With cardiac or coronary heart disease
With a history of a stroke
*high likelihood of becoming unstable with psilocybin use
If any of the above apply to you, it is not advised to take psilocybin. For your safety and in integrity with the mushrooms, I will not be able to guide you.
Special care and consideration is advised for people...
With a history of suicide attempt or ideation
Currently working through severe trauma
Currently breastfeeding (may do ‘pump and dump’ for a week after journeying)
Taking Dextromethorphan
With hypertension (it is safe but should continue medication)
Taking medications in the following drug classes: MAOIs, SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, NRIs, NDRIs, etc.**
Taking the following medications: Lithium, Quetiapine, Ziprasidone, Olanzapine, Clozapine, Aripiprazole, Risperidone, Tamadol, Trazadone, and Meperidine**
Taking the following supplements: Quercetin, Apigenin, Chrysin, Morin, Fisetin, Resveratrol, Pterostibene, Curcumin, Anthocyanins, Procyanidin B2, Epicatechin, Natrol, St John’s wort, or Ginseng**
**Psilocybin is a serotonergic substance which means it interacts with the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor. Psilocybin effects may be blunted or increase the risk of serotonin syndrome in people taking certain medications.
**Psilocybin is metabolized by monoamine oxidase enzymes. When combined with MAOIs, the breakdown of psilocybin is inhibited and causes a prolonged and intensified journey.
If any of the above apply to you, it does not render you unfit to take psilocybin. It simply means we will take special care to discuss your circumstances to determine safety and dosage. I am here to support you!
The greatest component to ensuring psilocybin and journeying safety is preparation, which is foundational in supporting my clients. We talk through these aspects, as well as tools for preparation and during the journey.
